Usually not, and that is the honest answer rather than a reassuring one. A leaking boiler is normally a component failing predictably, and turning the system off will hold it until morning. There are four situations where that changes, and they are handy to know precisely rather than worrying about vaguely.
Not an emergency in most cases. Boilers are built to fail safe, so turn the heating off, put a container under it, and it will generally hold overnight. It becomes urgent if there is any smell of gas, if there is electrical trouble such as tripping or buzzing or a burning smell, if water is running rather than dripping, or if it is reaching a neighbouring property. Gas is the one that is not a plumbing call at all: leave and ring 0800 111 999.
In order of seriousness, and the first is in a different category from the rest.
Worth explaining rather than just asserting, because the instinct that a leaking gas appliance must be dangerous is a reasonable one.
A boiler is a sealed appliance where water and gas are kept entirely separate, and a water leak does not create a gas hazard. The water in your radiators is not under great pressure, around one and a half bar, which is why most boiler leaks are a drip rather than a spray.
The failing components are almost always predictable wear items: a pump seal, a valve, a condensate trap, a joint that has loosened over years of expansion. None of those fails suddenly and catastrophically. They weep, then weep more.
And the appliance protects itself. If the pressure drops far enough the boiler locks out and stops firing rather than running dry, which is the same protective behaviour that shuts it down when pressure falls for any other reason.
So the realistic risk is water damage over hours and days rather than anything happening in the next twenty minutes. That is why turning it off and dealing with it in the morning is usually the right call rather than a compromise.
Assuming none of the four urgent signs apply, this is the holding position that limits the damage until it can be looked at properly.
It depends which water, and the distinction matters because turning off the wrong thing achieves nothing.
The heating circuit is a sealed loop containing a fixed amount of water. If the leak is on that circuit, the pressure will fall as it leaks and the boiler will lock out, and the leak will slow as pressure drops. There is no supply valve to turn off because it is not being fed continuously, unless the filling loop has been left open.
The mains supply is different. If the leak is on the cold feed into a combi, or on the hot outlet, that is fed continuously from the mains and it will keep going indefinitely. That one does need isolating, either at the small valves on the pipes beneath the boiler or at the property stopcock.
Practically: if the leak slows or stops after an hour with the heating off, it is the sealed side and it will hold. If it runs at the same rate regardless, it is mains fed and wants isolating.
Turning the boiler off at its electrical switch is separately worth doing overnight in any case, since it stops the system cycling and firing while nobody is watching it.
Said plainly, because a slow drip is easy to live with and the costs are not obvious.
The water damage compounds. A drip into a floor void does not dry out, it soaks into timber and plaster and stays wet, and the repair grows steadily from a component to a floor to a ceiling.
The system loses pressure and gets topped up repeatedly, and every top up brings fresh oxygenated water into a sealed circuit. That is what drives internal corrosion and the black sludge that eventually blocks radiators and wears out pumps, so a leak left running slowly damages the rest of the system as well as leaking.
The leaking component usually gets worse rather than stabilising, and acidic condensate in particular corrodes what it drips onto over months.
And where the appliance is under warranty, running it with a known fault is not the position you want to be in when a larger claim arises. None of that makes tonight an emergency. It makes next week a poor plan.
Everything above is about the appliance. In a tenement the question of urgency is frequently decided by the building instead, and it is the single reason a leak that would genuinely wait in a house does not wait here.
A boiler on an internal wall in a flat has a short path to the property below, and traditional floors offer nothing to slow it: tongue and groove boards with gaps, no membrane, and the underside of that floor forming somebody else's ceiling. Water found at ten at night in a house is a bowl and a phone call in the morning. The same water in a first floor flat may already be in the plaster below.
So the practical test in a flat is not only how fast it is leaking but where it is going. If the boiler sits above a habitable room rather than against an external wall, and if the floor around it is damp or the boards are lifting, treat it as more urgent than the drip rate suggests.
Telling the neighbour early is worth doing even when you are not certain anything has reached them. It costs nothing, it lets them check their own ceiling, and where a claim eventually follows, having raised it promptly is materially better than having it discovered. In a factored building the same applies to notifying the factor, since damage crossing between properties is their business as well as yours.
Ring straight away for any of the four urgent signs, and remember the gas one is not a call to us at all: leave the property and ring 0800 111 999 first. For an ordinary drip, turning the system off and calling in the morning is the sensible course, and having the rate, the pressure readings cold and hot, and a photograph of where the water is emerging makes that a much shorter conversation.
