Written by the engineers who do the work, for the half hour before you decide whether to phone anyone. Some of these jobs you can do yourself. We will tell you which, and we will tell you where to stop.
Most of what gets written about plumbing online is written to be found, not to be read. You search for why your boiler keeps losing pressure, you land on nine hundred words that restate the question four different ways, and at the bottom there is a form. You still do not know whether the thing on your wall is about to cost you money.
Mo started this business in 1999 partly because of how the trade was often run, and the same instinct applies here. An engineer who can explain the fault is an engineer who found the fault. Guessing and swapping parts is expensive for the customer and it is how the trade earned the reputation it spent twenty years shaking off. So these guides do the thing a good engineer does at the kitchen table: say what is actually happening, say what it usually turns out to be, and say plainly when it is a ten minute job you should just do yourself.
That last part costs us work and we write it anyway. Topping up the pressure on a combi boiler is genuinely a two minute job with a filling loop and a steady hand. If you can do it, do it. The call worth making is the one where the pressure drops again next week, because that is a leak or a failed expansion vessel and no amount of topping up fixes either.
Everything here is written against Glasgow housing, because that is what we work in every day and because it genuinely changes the answer. A pre-1919 tenement in Dennistoun with a shared back court gully has different drainage problems from a 1990s estate in Newton Mearns, and a top floor flat has different pressure behaviour from a ground floor conversion. Generic advice written for a detached house in the Midlands is not wrong exactly, it is just not about your building.

What boiler pressure should be cold and hot, why the right number differs by house, and when it matters. Glasgow Gas Safe engineers on 07988 591331.
Turn the boiler off and let it cool.
The water is leaving through a visible leak, through a leak you cannot see, or through the safety valve to the outside because the expansion vessel has failed.
Turn the heating off and let the system cool.
Low pressure is not dangerous.
Almost all Worcester Greenstar models use a filling key or a built-in filling link on the underside of the boiler rather than an external braided hose.

How to fix a running toilet: the three parts that cause it, how to tell which one, and the dye test that settles it. Glasgow plumbers on 07988 591331.
Take the button out of the lid first, because you cannot get the lid off with it in place on most designs.
Listen to the pattern rather than the noise.
Lift the cistern lid and flush.
Most loose seats are fixed by tightening the two fixings underneath the back of the pan, from below, by hand or with a spanner.
Dry the floor completely, then work out where the water reappears from.

How to repair a leaking pipe, what to do in the first five minutes, and which repairs hold. Glasgow plumbers and leak detection on 07988 591331.
Clean the pipe end and the inside of the fitting until both are bright, flux both, assemble, and heat the fitting rather than the solder until the solder is drawn into the joint by capillary action.
You have two choices: stop the water reaching the joint, or use a fitting that does not care.
Identify the joint type first.
You can, provided you fit a pipe insert, sometimes called a pipe stiffener, into the end of the plastic pipe before making the joint.

What a system boiler is, how it differs from a combi and a heat only boiler, and which one actually suits your home. Glasgow Gas Safe engineers on 07988 591331.
A combi heats your radiators, and when you open a hot tap it stops heating the radiators and diverts all its output into heating the water flowing through to that tap instead.
A condensing boiler extracts extra heat from its own exhaust gases by cooling them until the water vapour in them turns back into liquid.
A heat only boiler heats water and nothing else.

What a french drain is, how it actually works, and when it is the right answer for a wet garden or a damp wall. Glasgow drainage engineers on 07988 591331.
Surface water drainage takes rainwater from roofs and hard surfaces to a surface water sewer, a soakaway or a watercourse.
Foul water is waste from inside the property, and it goes to treatment rather than to a watercourse.
Establish the discharge point first, then dig a trench falling consistently toward it at roughly one in a hundred.

No scare tactics. A boiler locking out on a fault code is not an emergency, it is a Tuesday, and a guide that tells you otherwise is selling something. There are genuine emergencies in this trade and we say so clearly when we are writing about one, which is the only way the word keeps meaning anything.
No prices we cannot stand behind. Where a guide talks about cost it talks about what moves the number, because that is the part that is actually true for your house. A quote comes from someone looking at your system, and ours comes with a clear price before any work starts. That price is what goes on the invoice.
And nothing about gas that we would not say standing in your hallway. If you smell gas, the number is 0800 111 999, the National Gas Emergency Service, and they attend free. That call comes before ours, every time. We pick up once the escape is made safe.
None of the guides below will help you at eleven at night if you cannot find the thing you need to turn off. Five minutes on a dry afternoon is worth more than any amount of reading, and it is the same five minutes whichever of these topics eventually applies to you.
Find your stopcock and turn it. In a tenement flat it is usually under the kitchen sink, occasionally in a hall cupboard or under the bath, and in a lot of older closes there is a shared one as well. Turning it off and on again once a year is the point: a stopcock that has not moved since 1994 will often refuse to move at all, or will refuse to seal again afterwards, and finding that out during a burst is a genuinely bad evening. If it is seized, that is a small job now and a flooded flat later.
Write down your boiler make and model. It is on a sticker behind the front panel or inside the flap, and having it to hand turns a vague phone call into a specific one. It tells us whether the part is on the van, whether the fault code you are looking at means what you think it means, and roughly what the appliance is worth spending money on.
And go and look at your drain covers once, in daylight, so you know how many you have and where they sit. That is the piece of information that most often turns a straightforward drainage visit into an hour of hunting under decking and bin stores before any actual work starts.
Mo, who started the business in 1999 as an apprentice with tools and an unreliable van, and the team who work with him: Muhammad and David on gas and heating alongside Mo, all three Gas Safe registered, David on underfloor heating specifically. Paul leads the drain team with Kyle on the high pressure jetting. Matt takes the emergency callouts. No subcontractors on the core trades and no call centre, which is deliberate, because a reputation that lives or dies locally is the only kind worth having.

“Our radiator pipe was bent and leaking. They answered straight away… Guy was here an hour later and he was wearing ID, very professional, patient and kind. We just got a new carpet in this room and he done an amazing job on getting little to no water on it. Couldn't recommend enough, price was reasonable.”
