Short answer, no. It is inconvenient rather than dangerous, and the boiler stopping is the appliance looking after itself rather than a warning of something worse. That said, the reason people ask this question is usually a sensible instinct, so be clear about which boiler problems genuinely are urgent, because some are.
Low pressure is not dangerous. Below roughly 0.5 bar the boiler locks out and stops firing, which protects the heat exchanger from running with too little water in it, and the practical result is no heating and, on a combi, no hot water. Nothing is at risk of exploding and nothing becomes unsafe to be near. What matters is why the pressure fell, because a repeated fall means a leak or a failed part that will get worse.
A sealed heating system needs enough water in it, under enough pressure, for the pump to move that water around the circuit properly. Drop below a certain point and the pump starts to struggle, and water in the heat exchanger can heat unevenly rather than flowing away as it should.
So manufacturers fit a low pressure switch. It watches the pressure and, below about 0.5 bar, it simply will not let the boiler fire. That is the entire safety mechanism and it is a preventative one. By the time you notice a problem, the boiler has already stopped, which is why low pressure presents as a cold house rather than as a hazard.
The word dangerous does not really apply to the state you are in. You have an appliance that has switched itself off and a set of radiators full of cold water. There is no pressure build up, no risk of rupture, nothing venting. The failure mode of low pressure is inconvenience.
There is a longer term cost, which is worth separating from danger. Running a system chronically low, or repeatedly topping it up with fresh mains water, brings dissolved oxygen into a circuit that is supposed to be sealed, and oxygen is what corrodes radiators from the inside and produces the black sludge that eventually blocks them. That is a maintenance argument rather than a safety one.
People usually want both answers, and the answer to this one is also no, for a designed reason. Sealed systems carry a pressure relief valve set to open at around 3 bar, which discharges water through a pipe to the outside. The system cannot climb past that point while the valve works, and the components are rated well above it.
What high pressure costs you is joints and seals working harder than they should, water going out of the discharge pipe, and a relief valve that has lifted repeatedly often failing to seal afterwards. Then you have a system that will not hold pressure at all, which is a repair rather than an adjustment.
So neither direction is a safety emergency. Both are faults worth understanding rather than living with, and in both cases the number on the gauge is a symptom of something else rather than the problem itself.
This is the part worth knowing, because the instinct behind the question is a good one and it deserves a straight answer rather than reassurance across the board. Some boiler and gas situations are urgent, and none of them are about the pressure gauge.
If you smell gas, that is the genuine emergency. Do not touch electrical switches, do not use the doorbell, open windows and doors, turn the supply off at the meter if you can reach it safely, get everyone out, and ring the National Gas Emergency Service on 0800 111 999 from outside. They hold the statutory duty to make a gas escape safe, they attend free, and that call comes before any plumber, including us. We pick up afterwards, once the escape has been isolated.
Carbon monoxide is the other one and it is more insidious because there is nothing to smell. Suspect it if a gas flame that should be crisp and blue is burning lazy and yellow, if there is sooty or brown staining around the appliance, if there is heavy condensation on windows near it, or if people or pets in the house have headaches, nausea or drowsiness that improve when they go out and return when they come back. That is a leave-the-building situation, same number, 0800 111 999, and a working audible CO alarm is the only reliable detection there is.
Beyond those two: water pouring rather than seeping, a burning or electrical smell from the appliance, or scalding water from a tap that is far hotter than it should be. Those want dealing with promptly. A gauge reading 0.4 bar does not belong in that list.
Practical order, on the assumption you would like the heating back on this evening.
The honest caveat to all of the above is that being without heating is not equally serious for everyone, and that is a question about the household rather than about the boiler.
For a young, healthy adult in a well insulated flat, a cold evening while you sort the pressure out is genuinely nothing. For an older person, a newborn, someone with a respiratory or circulatory condition, or anyone who cannot easily move about to keep warm, an unheated home in a Scottish January is a real health risk rather than a discomfort. Cold housing is associated with worse outcomes for exactly those groups, which is why it is worth saying rather than glossing.
So the answer to whether this is urgent depends on who is in the house. If that is you or someone you are responsible for, say so when you call. It changes how a job gets prioritised, and it is far better said plainly than left for someone to guess.
In the meantime, close doors to keep one room warm rather than heating the whole property, and use electric heating if you have it. Never use a gas hob, an oven or a patio heater to warm a room. Those are unflued appliances burning gas in a space you are sitting in, and that is one of the more reliable ways to produce the carbon monoxide situation described above.
The reason we push back on treating a pressure lockout as trivial in this city has nothing to do with the boiler and everything to do with what an unheated Glasgow flat does in a hard frost. The pressure fault is harmless. The burst pipe that follows a week of an empty, unheated property in February is not, and it is a far bigger repair than the one you were avoiding.
The vulnerable pipework is the pipework in the cold parts of the building, and older property has more of it. Runs through an unheated close, along an outside wall in a tenement gable, in a loft space above a top floor flat, or in the void under a suspended ground floor. Those are the ones that freeze, and they freeze because the heating that normally keeps that fabric a few degrees above freezing has stopped.
So if a boiler locks out and you are going away, or the property is empty between tenants, the sensible move is not to leave it cold and deal with it later. Get the pressure back up and leave the heating running low, or if that is not possible, have the system drained down properly. Every winter produces a run of calls that started as something small and became a ceiling because a flat sat cold for a fortnight.
The other local wrinkle is the shared close. In a tenement the stair itself is unheated and often has a window that somebody has propped open, and pipework crossing that space is exposed in a way it would not be in a house. It is useful to know whether any of your heating or water pipes run through communal space, because that is the first place to look when a cold snap turns into a leak.
For a straightforward low pressure lockout, top it up and see whether it holds. Call when it will not hold, when the gauge was at zero, when the same fault has come back three or four times, or when there is anyone in the house for whom a cold night is a health matter rather than a nuisance. On a sealed system, which is nearly every combi and most modern system boilers, aim for 1.0 to 1.5 bar when the heating has been off for a few hours and the system is cold.
The water is leaving through a visible leak, through a leak you cannot see, or through the safety valve to the outside because the expansion vessel has failed.
Turn the boiler off and let it cool.
