Resetting a boiler takes about five seconds and the useful part of this page is not the five seconds. It is knowing how many times you should do it before you stop and phone someone, because a boiler that keeps locking out is telling you something and resetting it repeatedly is how a cheap repair becomes an expensive one.
Find the reset control, usually a button marked with a flame symbol or the word reset, and hold it for around three to five seconds until the boiler fires. On many models it is a dial you turn to a reset position and back. Give it up to a couple of minutes to relight. Reset it twice. If it locks out a third time, stop and get it looked at, because at that point the lockout is the boiler protecting itself from something real rather than clearing a one-off glitch.
Worth understanding, because it changes how you think about the reset button.
A boiler runs a set of safety checks continuously: is there a flame when there should be, is the pressure right, is the flue clear, is the water flowing, is anything overheating. If a check fails, the boiler stops and refuses to restart on its own. That is a lockout, and it is a deliberate, designed response rather than a breakdown.
The lockout is the boiler saying it has detected something it will not run through. The reset button clears that state and lets it try again. It does not fix anything. It is the equivalent of restarting a computer that has crashed, and it works for exactly the same reason and with exactly the same limits.
So a single lockout after a power cut, a very cold night, or a moment of low pressure is often nothing at all, and one reset is the right response. A boiler locking out repeatedly is reporting a fault that is still present every time it tries, and each reset is asking it to run despite the thing it detected.
It varies by manufacturer and by model generation, which is why the generic advice to press the reset button is unhelpful when you cannot see one. Find the model name on the sticker behind the front flap and the manual will show it exactly. Broadly:
Four steps, and the second is where most people go wrong.
First, note the fault code on the display before you do anything. Resetting clears it, and that code is the single most useful piece of information if the boiler locks out again. Photograph it. People reset first and then cannot tell an engineer what it said, which turns a five minute diagnosis into a longer one.
Second, hold the button. Three to five seconds is typical, not a quick press. A large share of failed resets are somebody tapping the button and concluding the boiler is dead. Where it is a dial, turn it to the reset position, hold briefly, and return it.
Third, wait. The boiler will usually run a purge cycle before attempting ignition, so there is a pause of anything up to a couple of minutes with fans running and no flame. That is normal, and interrupting it starts the whole sequence over.
Fourth, watch what happens. Firing and running normally means it cleared. Locking out again immediately means the fault is still live and present, and that is much more useful information than a successful reset.
The important part of this page. Two or three is the practical answer, and there are real reasons rather than caution for its own sake.
Manufacturers commonly build in a limit, so after a set number of failed ignition attempts the boiler locks out in a way an ordinary reset will not clear, and it needs an engineer. Resetting repeatedly is a way of using up those attempts.
More importantly, each reset asks the appliance to attempt ignition again despite a condition it has already refused to run with. On an ignition fault that means unburnt gas being introduced to the combustion chamber and purged repeatedly. On an overheat fault it means asking a boiler that has detected a temperature problem to fire again. Neither is dangerous in the sense of being about to cause an incident, because the safety systems are doing exactly what they are designed for, but neither is doing the appliance any good.
And practically, repeated resetting destroys the evidence. The fault code, the pattern of when it locks out, how long it runs before stopping: that is the diagnosis. A customer who has reset it fifteen times over a week has a boiler that is worse and a story that is harder to follow.
So: reset once. If it goes again, reset a second time and note the code. If there is a third, stop and call. The most useful thing you can offer at that point is the code and the pattern.
All free, all take a minute, and any one of them may explain the lockout without anyone coming out.
The pressure gauge. Below about half a bar and the boiler locks out on low pressure, which is a top-up rather than a fault, and no number of resets will clear it while the gauge is still low.
The condensate pipe, if it is a cold snap. A frozen condensate is the classic winter lockout, and a boiler that shuts down during a hard frost with an external condensate run is very often not broken at all. Thawing it with a warm cloth or a hot water bottle, never boiling water, and then resetting is frequently the whole repair.
The gas supply. If you have a prepayment meter, check there is credit, and check other gas appliances work. A boiler with no gas will lock out on ignition failure and look like a boiler fault, and this is a common and entirely free explanation.
Between them those three account for a good proportion of lockouts, which is why they are worth a minute before the button gets pressed.
Three situations where the button is the wrong response.
If you can smell gas. That is not a boiler question. Do not touch electrical switches, get everyone out, and ring the National Gas Emergency Service on 0800 111 999 from outside. They hold the statutory duty to make a gas escape safe and they attend free.
If you suspect carbon monoxide, which shows as a lazy yellow flame where it should be crisp and blue, sooty staining around the appliance, or headaches and nausea that ease when you leave the house. Same response, same number.
If there is water leaking from the appliance onto electrics, or a burning smell, or the boiler is tripping the consumer unit. Isolate it and leave it off rather than resetting into a fault involving electricity.
In every other case the reset button is a reasonable first move, once or twice.
Boiler lockouts in this city are strongly seasonal and strongly clustered, and knowing that is worth something the morning after the first hard frost, because it tells you what has probably happened before you have looked at anything.
A run of nights below freezing produces a wave of boilers shutting down across Glasgow, and a large share of them are not faulty. They are condensate pipes that have frozen. Condensate leaves a modern boiler as a trickle rather than a flow, and a trickle in an uninsulated external pipe in a hard frost turns to ice, the blockage backs up, and the boiler detects it and stops. Thaw the pipe and reset and it runs.
The reason it is more common here than the general advice suggests is where the pipe has to go. In a tenement flat there is frequently no internal waste near the boiler position, so the condensate was run externally down a gable or into a hopper because that was the only route available. That is exactly the arrangement that freezes, and it is why the same flats lock out every hard winter.
So if a boiler stops during a cold snap, check the condensate before assuming a fault, and if it has happened more than once, ask about rerouting the pipe internally rather than treating it as weather. It is a permanent fix for an annual problem.
The other local pattern is the prepayment meter, which is common across the city's rented stock. A boiler locking out on ignition failure with no gas reaching it looks exactly like an appliance fault to somebody who has not thought to check the meter, and it is the cheapest possible explanation to rule out.
Call after the third lockout rather than continuing to reset, because at that point the boiler is reporting a real fault and each reset is using up ignition attempts and destroying the evidence. Have the fault code ready, or a photograph of it, plus roughly how long the boiler runs before it stops and whether it happens at a particular time of day.
