Shawlands is one of the Southside's best-known tenement districts, blonde and red sandstone closes lining Pollokshaws Road and the streets around it, most of them converted into flats over a century ago and rewired in stages ever since rather than as a single job. That history matters on an emergency call, because what we find behind a Shawlands socket depends heavily on which decade that particular circuit was last touched.

A lot of Shawlands flats have had a partial rewire at some point, a kitchen extension here, a bathroom upgrade there, which means a single flat can have two or three different eras of wiring meeting at the consumer unit.
