What moves the number is the duct: reusing a sound existing route is the cheap end, cutting a new route through an internal ceiling is mid-range, and going through a thick external sandstone wall in a tenement is the most involved. We price the duct honestly rather than quoting a cheap fan swap and discovering the real job once the old unit is off the wall.
New Fan, or Fix the Ducting You Have?
Take the fan off the wall and look at where the duct goes. If it runs a short, reasonably straight route to an external terminal and the fan still is not clearing the room, the unit is genuinely tired and replacing it will fix things. If the duct disappears into a loft, sags between joists, or takes three or four bends to get anywhere, the fan was never the problem and a new one will disappoint you in exactly the same way. In that situation the money is better spent re-routing the duct and keeping the fan you have, which is often the cheaper job of the two. We will tell you which one you are looking at before quoting, because it is the difference between fixing the damp and paying to move it somewhere else.
