Coming back from Edinburgh or Glasgow at six to a cold house, then sitting with the heating on boost until it finally feels warm at eight, is how plenty of Bathgate households spend a winter evening. It is rarely the boiler. The heating was set to come on when you walk in, and a house that has been cold since the morning needs time before it feels warm, because the walls and the furniture have to warm up as well as the air. A timber framed house on one of the newer estates gets there far quicker than a solid walled terrace near the town centre. Heating engineers spend a fair amount of time on exactly this, setting the timer, the thermostat and the hot water so the house is ready when you are, without paying to heat it all day.

Bathgate is a commuter town, to Edinburgh one way and Glasgow the other, and a lot of its houses sit cold all day and need to be warm the minute somebody gets in.
Bathgate is an old West Lothian burgh with terraced streets round the town centre, post-war semis, and large estates built from the 1990s on for people travelling the M8 or the railway to work. Many of the newer estate houses are timber framed and well insulated. The older terraces have solid stone or brick walls. Both kinds of house are often empty from early morning to early evening, and that pattern decides how the heating should be run more than anything else about them.
When heating comes on in a cold house, the air warms first and quickly. The walls, the floors and the furniture take much longer, and until they catch up they keep drawing heat out of the air and out of you, so a room can read twenty degrees on the thermostat and still feel cold. The start time on the programmer has to allow for whichever house you are in, and the one fitted by the last owner rarely does.
If the heating will not come on at all, whatever the programmer says, that is a breakdown. Call 07988 591331.
Repairs to all the common makes by Gas Safe registered engineers, and checking the boiler is wired to the controls the way you think it is.
Drainage is a separate team on the same number.
Programmers, room thermostats, radiator valves and hot water timing set up around when the house is actually lived in.
If the programmer brings the heating on at six and you are in at six, you spend the first hour of the evening in a cold house. Moving the start back by the time the house takes to warm up costs very little, because the boiler is only running that hour earlier, not all day.
Boost runs the heating for an hour regardless of the programme, and in a lot of houses it has become the way the heating is switched on every night. It works, late. Once the start time is right, boost is only needed on the odd evening you come home early.
Plenty of programmers are set once for every day of the week. A house that is empty from eight to six on a Tuesday is lived in all day on a Saturday, and a weekday schedule leaves it cold through the middle of the day when somebody is in.
For most of the year in most Bathgate houses, off while you are out is cheaper. A house loses heat faster the warmer it is inside compared with outside, so a house left to cool through the day loses less than one held at a steady temperature, and the gas used warming it back up in the evening is less than the gas it would have used staying warm. What you pay for it is the warm-up, which is why the start time matters so much. There are exceptions. In a long hard frost, a low setting through the day stops an older solid walled terrace getting so cold that it cannot recover in an evening. In a house that struggles with condensation, keeping it from getting fully cold helps. And if anybody is at home through the day, even part of it, the house should be heated for them, not for the empty hours. Set the times for the house you have and the week you actually live, and change them when either changes.

“Our radiator pipe was bent and leaking. They answered straight away… Guy was here an hour later and he was wearing ID, very professional, patient and kind. We just got a new carpet in this room and he done an amazing job on getting little to no water on it. Couldn't recommend enough, price was reasonable.”

“We lost heating just in time for the coldest day of the year with a baby in the house… When I contacted them they were ready to dispatch that night. Fixed by the afternoon. Quoted that morning and no extra charges were added. Honestly cannot thank them enough.”

“As a small business owner, I needed a drainage company that could respond quickly. The team attended first thing in the morning, cleared the blocked drain and carried out a full CCTV survey. All documentation emailed across promptly. Professional, efficient and great value for money.”
