A cold radiator gets quoted a power flush more often than it needs one. Sometimes flushing is exactly right and the system runs better for a decade. Sometimes it is an expensive way to not fix a stuck valve. The two are told apart by where the radiator is cold, which takes a few minutes to establish and is worth insisting on before anybody agrees to anything.
Tell us what's up, we usually get back within the hour with a clear price.
Alloa has a lot of systems that have been running quietly for twenty or thirty years, and the honest answer on most of them is that they need one specific thing rather than everything.
A power flush is a real repair and it does a real job. Circulating a cleaning solution through a system at pressure lifts out the black sludge that builds up in older heating, and where that sludge is the problem, flushing fixes it properly and the system runs better afterwards for years. The trouble is that it is also the easiest thing in the trade to sell, because it sounds thorough, it takes a day, and almost any heating complaint can be blamed on a dirty system without anybody having to prove it.
The proof takes about five minutes and it is not complicated. Feel the radiators. Where they are cold tells you what is wrong, and the different patterns mean genuinely different things with genuinely different fixes, one of which costs nothing and one of which is a day's work. Plumbers who quote a flush without feeling the radiators have not diagnosed anything, they have guessed, and a guess that expensive is worth pushing back on.
So we go round the house before quoting. Mo, Muhammad and David are all Gas Safe registered and any of them will tell you plainly if the answer is a bleed key and a stiff valve rather than a flush, even though that is the smaller invoice. If it genuinely is sludge we will say that too, and explain what we expect it to change. Paul and Kyle run the drainage side and Matt takes the out-of-hours calls.
Alloa is a booked day on the Falkirk and Stirling round rather than a same-morning call, so planned work goes into a slot we set aside. For a heating diagnosis it helps if the system has been running that day, because a cold system tells you far less than a warm one.
Out of hours Matt takes the callouts. With heating, the useful thing to tell us on the phone is whether there is hot water as well as heating, or one without the other, because that splits the possibilities immediately. Call 07988 591331.
Gas and heating is Mo, Muhammad or David, all Gas Safe registered. Boiler repairs get diagnosed to the part rather than fixed by changing several and seeing what happens.
Paul leads the drain team and Kyle runs the jetting, across the town and the villages around it.
Radiator faults, circulation problems, pumps and system cleaning where it is genuinely needed. We will tell you which of those you have before quoting for any of them.
That pattern is sludge settling out in the bottom of the radiator, and it is the one case where flushing is genuinely the answer rather than a suggestion.
That is air, not sludge, and it is fixed with a bleed key in about a minute. Flushing a system for it achieves nothing at all.
A single cold radiator surrounded by working ones is usually its own valve rather than the system, and treating the whole house for it is the wrong scale of answer.
When nothing gets properly hot the question is circulation and pump rather than any individual radiator, and that is a different diagnosis again.
A house in Alloa had been quoted a power flush for a bedroom radiator that never got warm. The radiator was cold at the top and hot at the bottom, which is air rather than sludge. It took a bleed key and about a minute, and it had been like that for two winters. We would rather be the firm that says so than the one that takes the flush money, partly because it is the right thing and partly because the flush would not have fixed it and we would have been back anyway.
We give you a clear price before any work starts and that price is what goes on the invoice. Where the answer turns out to be smaller than what you were expecting to pay for, we will tell you, and where a system genuinely does need cleaning we will explain what we expect it to change before you commit.
Feel the radiators before anybody quotes anything. Turn the heating on, give it twenty minutes, then put a hand at the top and bottom of each one. Cold at the bottom and warm at the top is sludge, settled out where the flow is slowest, and that is the pattern a flush is designed for. If several radiators do it, the system needs cleaning and the money is well spent. Cold at the top and warm at the bottom is the opposite, that is trapped air, and a bleed key fixes it in a minute at no cost. A flush would achieve nothing. One radiator cold while everything else is fine is usually its own valve, either a thermostatic head stuck closed or a pin seized in the body, and that is a small repair on that radiator rather than anything to do with the system. Everything lukewarm at once points at circulation, which means the pump or a valve that is not opening, and again flushing is not the answer. So a flush is worth it in exactly one of those four cases. If it genuinely is sludge, ask what happens afterwards, because a system worth cleaning is usually a system worth protecting, and a magnetic filter and inhibitor are what stop it silting up again. A flush with nothing done to prevent it recurring is half a job.

“Our radiator pipe was bent and leaking. They answered straight away… Guy was here an hour later and he was wearing ID, very professional, patient and kind. We just got a new carpet in this room and he done an amazing job on getting little to no water on it. Couldn't recommend enough, price was reasonable.”

“We lost heating just in time for the coldest day of the year with a baby in the house… When I contacted them they were ready to dispatch that night. Fixed by the afternoon. Quoted that morning and no extra charges were added. Honestly cannot thank them enough.”

“As a small business owner, I needed a drainage company that could respond quickly. The team attended first thing in the morning, cleared the blocked drain and carried out a full CCTV survey. All documentation emailed across promptly. Professional, efficient and great value for money.”
