Water leaves the leak, runs sideways along a floor void until it finds a gap, and comes through wherever that gap happens to be. The room directly above the stain is frequently innocent. Why does a leak in a Cumbernauld split-level take longer to find?

Because water leaves the fault horizontally before it drops. It runs along a joist to wherever there is a gap, and in a split-level house the joists are at several different heights, so the gap it finds can be on a different level entirely from where it started. That is why the damp patch is so often nowhere near the failure. Finding it properly means working back from where the water is showing to where it could have come from, which takes longer than opening the ceiling underneath and is a great deal cheaper than opening three of them. It is also why we would rather see it while it is actually wet.
