The kitchen drain in my Shawlands flat drains slowly and there is a bad smell, what should I do?

A slow-draining kitchen sink with a bad smell is almost always grease buildup inside the pipe. Do not pour chemical drain cleaner down it as this rarely fixes a full grease blockage and can damage older pipes. If the smell suggests the blockage is in the shared stack rather than your individual connection they will assess the full system.

Yes, this is serious and needs to be dealt with immediately. Sewage backing up through the toilet means the shared drainage stack has a serious blockage and waste from the flats above is having nowhere to go except back into the lowest point in the system, which is your flat.
