The West End's Victorian tenements and large sandstone properties sit above drainage infrastructure that in some streets dates back to the 1880s, and the River Kelvin running through the area means root ingress from riverside vegetation is a specific local drainage risk.
The West End of Glasgow is built on and around the valley of the River Kelvin, which runs from Maryhill south through Kelvingrove Park before joining the Clyde at Partick. This geography has a direct impact on the drainage under the West End's sandstone streets. A Typical Callout in West End
A close off Hyndland Road had been getting the same ground floor backup every couple of months for over a year, and three different flats had each paid to have it rodded at some point without anybody joining the dots. We jetted it and put the camera down. About seven metres out, under the back court, a section of the original clay had dropped at a joint and roots from one of the garden trees had found the gap. Rodding was pushing the blockage past the break every time, which is why it kept clearing and kept coming back. We showed the owners the footage, they could see the problem for themselves, and a short excavated repair of that one section ended it. The clearing had never been the issue. Nobody had looked.
