Water that comes out of the tap brown, cloudy or tasting of something is worrying in a way that a dripping valve is not, and the first thing worth settling is whether it is your house at all. A fair share of it is the network doing something outside, in which case there is nothing in the building to repair and waiting it out is the answer.

Barrhead has a good deal of older housing stock, and where the pipework inside a property is as old as the pipework outside it, telling the two apart is the whole of the diagnosis.
Water that looks wrong coming out of a tap worries people in a way that a dripping valve never does, and the first useful thing is to work out whether it is the building at all. A good share of discolouration is the network doing something in the street, which means there is nothing inside the property to repair and the answer is to run the tap and wait. Plumbers get called out to a fair number of these and leave without doing anything, which is a wasted visit for everybody.
Older housing stock makes the question harder rather than easier, because the pipework in the house may be the same age as the pipework outside it. Iron mains carry a fine sediment that settles when the water is still and lifts again whenever flow changes, and older internal runs do the same thing on a smaller scale. So the symptom is genuinely ambiguous and the diagnosis is a matter of narrowing rather than looking.
Three checks do most of that narrowing and none of them need anybody to attend. Which tap, whether it clears, and whether the neighbours have it too. Mo, Muhammad and David are all Gas Safe registered and cover anything on the hot side, where the cylinder rather than the supply is usually the answer.
Barrhead is close in and we are through it regularly, so booked work usually has a choice of days. On discolouration, ring and describe it before booking anything, because the answer may be that nobody needs to come at all.
Out of hours Matt takes the callouts. Discoloured water is not usually a night call. Water that has stopped arriving at all is, and that is a different problem. Call 07988 591331.
Gas and heating is Mo, Muhammad or David, all Gas Safe registered. A taste or a colour on the hot side only points at the cylinder rather than the supply, and that is their side of it.
Paul leads the drain team and Kyle runs the jetting, across the older and newer housing alike.
Heating work across the stock here, including systems where the water going round has been in there a very long time.
Disturbance in the main lifts settled iron sediment and carries it into properties nearby. It clears on its own once the main has been run, and it usually affects several houses at once.
Tiny air bubbles coming out of solution. Fill a glass and watch it: clearing upwards is air and harmless, staying uniformly cloudy is something else.
One outlet affected while the rest are clear points at that pipe run or that fitting rather than at the supply, and often at a section that has sat unused.
Hot-only symptoms point at the cylinder or at the hot pipework rather than at the incoming supply, which is a different investigation entirely.
Three houses in one street here reported brown water on the same morning and two of them had already rung round for quotes on replacing pipework. There had been a repair to the main a street away the day before, which had lifted decades of settled sediment. It cleared by the afternoon on its own. The useful thing anybody did that day was ask a neighbour.
We give you a clear price before any work starts and that price is what goes on the invoice. Where the answer is to run the tap and wait, we would rather tell you that on the phone than turn up and charge you to say it.
Three checks, none of which need a plumber, and they will tell you which conversation to have. First, run the cold tap at the kitchen sink for a couple of minutes. That one is normally fed directly off the incoming main before anything else in the house, so it is the closest thing you have to a sample of what is arriving at the property. If it runs clear after a short while and the problem is elsewhere in the house, the supply is fine and the issue is internal. Second, check whether it is every tap or one tap. All of them together points outside or at the incoming main. One on its own points at that run, especially if it is an outlet nobody uses much. Third, ask a neighbour. Discolouration that arrived the same day for several houses in the street is almost always the network, often after a burst or a repair somewhere nearby, and it settles once the main has been flushed through. If it is only your property and only sometimes, note when it happens and what you were running at the time, because that pattern is worth more than any single sample. And if the water is discoloured on the hot side alone, stop looking at the supply. That is the cylinder or the hot pipework, and it is a different job with a different answer.

“Our radiator pipe was bent and leaking. They answered straight away… Guy was here an hour later and he was wearing ID, very professional, patient and kind. We just got a new carpet in this room and he done an amazing job on getting little to no water on it. Couldn't recommend enough, price was reasonable.”

“We lost heating just in time for the coldest day of the year with a baby in the house… When I contacted them they were ready to dispatch that night. Fixed by the afternoon. Quoted that morning and no extra charges were added. Honestly cannot thank them enough.”

“As a small business owner, I needed a drainage company that could respond quickly. The team attended first thing in the morning, cleared the blocked drain and carried out a full CCTV survey. All documentation emailed across promptly. Professional, efficient and great value for money.”
