More Newton Mearns houses run underfloor heating than anywhere else on our patch, and almost none of them run only underfloor. There is a kitchen or a garden room on the floor and radiators everywhere else, both fed by one boiler that wants to send them very different water. Where that was set up properly it is excellent. Where it was not, one half of the house is always wrong.

About Newton Mearns
Underfloor in the extension and radiators in the rest of the house is close to the standard arrangement in Newton Mearns, and it is two heating systems sharing a boiler rather than one system with a different floor.
Newton Mearns has a lot of generous modern housing and a lot of it has been extended, and underfloor heating turns up in both. That is a genuinely different job from a house with radiators throughout, because the two want different water. Radiators are designed around water going out hot, somewhere in the region of 65 to 75 degrees. An underfloor circuit is buried in screed with a floor covering over it and runs far cooler, usually between 35 and 45, because anything hotter is uncomfortable to stand on and hard on the floor itself. Running both off one boiler needs a blending arrangement at the manifold and its own zone control. Neither is exotic and neither is expensive. Both are easy to leave out when an extension is being finished quickly and the heating is the last thing anyone thinks about.

Common Problems in Newton Mearns
Underfloor teed straight off the radiator circuit
No blending valve, so the floor gets radiator-temperature water. Usually reported as an uncomfortably hot kitchen floor, sometimes as damage to a timber covering, and occasionally as the rest of the house never quite warming up because the floor is taking everything.

Thick underlay, heavy carpet or a solid timber board on top of a screed all reduce what the floor can give out. The heating was often sized before anyone chose the flooring, and the room is cold for a reason nobody looks at.
A Typical Callout in Newton Mearns
A garden room on one of the estates off Ayr Road had underfloor put in when it was built, teed off the existing heating with no mixer on it. The floor was too hot to stand on and the radiators at the far end of the house had gone lukewarm. The owners had been told that was an undersized boiler. It was not. The floor was taking radiator-temperature water and a large share of the flow with it. David fitted a blending manifold with its own pump and gave the underfloor its own zone. The boiler was left exactly as it was, and the radiators came back on their own.

Underfloor, Radiators, or Both in One Newton Mearns House?
If you are extending and choosing what to heat the new room with, it depends more on the floor than on the room. Underfloor works best under tile or stone, in a room with a decent amount of glass, where the heating runs long and steady rather than in short bursts. It is genuinely lovely in a kitchen. It is a poor choice in a room you want warm in twenty minutes and a waste of money under thick carpet. Radiators are less fashionable and they respond fast, which for a bedroom or a study is the more useful property. Where you end up with both, the money worth spending is not on the floor but on the manifold and the zoning, because that is what lets the two coexist. And if you are told the underfloor makes the house heat-pump ready, treat that as a maybe. It helps, since a heat pump wants low flow temperatures and a floor is happy with those. Whether the rest of the house is ready is a bigger question and we would rather answer it honestly than sell you the idea.

Probably not. The whole screed has to come up to temperature before the room feels it, so a few hours is normal rather than a fault. What usually goes wrong is the timing. Set to come on an hour before you want the room, like a radiator, it will always feel late, and turning the thermostat up makes it overshoot later instead of arriving sooner. Underfloor wants to run long and steady. Plumbers get called out to this more often than to anything actually broken. If it still is not getting there once the timing is right, the usual causes are the flow temperature at the manifold or a floor covering insulating more than anyone expected. Call 07988 591331.
