Installation is the rest: a property getting a boiler where there wasn't one, a conversion or extension needing its own system, or a change of system type such as coming off a back boiler onto a combi. Same team either way, but the survey and the pipework are a bigger part of the job here.

Yes, and it is most of what this page covers. A boiler installation in the UK means a gas boiler installation unless you say otherwise, so the survey, the fixed price and the Gas Safe commissioning described here all apply. If you are after an electric boiler, which is a genuinely different job with no flue and a much heavier electrical supply, that has its own page.

It depends on the boiler, the property and how much pipework has to change, so we survey before quoting rather than giving a number over the phone that moves later. What you get is a fixed price after the survey, and that figure is what ends up on the invoice.

How long does the work take?

A straightforward install in a property already set up for it is usually a day. A system change, a first-time install or anything needing new pipework runs to two or three days. We tell you which before you commit, not on the morning we start.

Will you size the boiler for my house or just match what was there?

Size it for the house. Matching whatever was fitted last time is how properties end up with a boiler too big for them, short-cycling and costing more to run than it needs to. We work the heat load out from the rooms, the radiators and the hot water demand, then recommend from that.

Worcester Bosch, Vaillant, Baxi, Ideal and Vokèra mainly, and we are manufacturer certified across those. We will give you an honest opinion on which suits the property and the budget rather than pushing whichever carries the best margin that month.

Do I need building control notified?

Yes, a new gas boiler is notifiable work in Scotland. We handle the notification as part of the job and you get the paperwork for your records, which matters when you come to sell.

What warranty do I get on a first-time installation?

Up to 12 years on the boiler depending on the make, registered with the manufacturer on the day we commission it. Worth knowing that most manufacturers only honour the longer warranties where the system was flushed and a filter fitted at installation, which is why both are standard here rather than optional. Our own workmanship is guaranteed for 12 months alongside it.

Can I get a boiler installed in a tenement flat with no existing one?

Usually yes, though it needs a proper look first. The two things that decide it are where a flue can safely terminate and whether the gas supply into the flat is adequate. Both are answerable on a survey visit, and we will tell you straight if a particular flat is not practical rather than starting and stopping.

Should I be considering a heat pump instead?

Honest answer, sometimes, but not as often as the current push suggests. In a well-insulated property with room for the unit and bigger radiators, a heat pump can genuinely work. In a Glasgow tenement flat with solid walls, limited outside space and a shared close, the numbers usually do not stack up yet. We would rather say that than sell you something that disappoints, and we will tell you if we think your property is one of the ones where it does make sense.

Do you flush the system as part of an installation?

Yes, and we fit a magnetic filter as standard. Putting a new boiler onto an old system full of sludge is the fastest way to void a warranty and shorten the life of the thing you have just paid for.

Accepted Answer

Often, yes, and a first-time install or system change is the natural moment to do it. Moving a boiler from a bedroom cupboard to a kitchen or utility means new gas, water and flue runs, so it adds to the cost, but it is much cheaper done now than as a separate job later.

Do you use subcontractors for installations?

No. Mo and David do the gas and heating work themselves, same as every other job. On a spend this size it matters that the person who surveyed it is the person who fits it and the person you ring if something is not right afterwards.

We set the controls up with you rather than handing over a manual and leaving. That means the timer, the thermostat and the hot water schedule set to how you actually live, plus the Benchmark logbook filled in and the warranty paperwork in your hand before we go.

Outside winter, usually a week or two from survey to fitting. From about October the diary tightens because breakdowns take priority, so if you already know the boiler is on its way out, getting the survey done in late summer is worth doing even if you fit it later.

Yes, removal and disposal is part of the price, along with any old tank or cylinder that comes out on a system change. Nothing gets left in the close or the garden for you to sort out afterwards.
