Every winter we get calls from Bathgate about combi boilers that have gone off the boil, hot water not as hot as it was, showers weaker, everything taking longer. A lot of those boilers are working exactly as designed. The water arriving at them is simply much colder than it was in summer, and a combi has to make up the whole of that difference in one pass.
Tell us what's up, we usually get back within the hour with a clear price.
Bathgate's combi boilers have to lift incoming mains water a good deal further in January than in July, which is why hot water performance drops off in winter without anything failing.
Bathgate is a West Lothian town that has grown substantially, with an older centre of terraced and stone property, post-war housing around it, and a large amount of newer estate development on the edges built through the last twenty five years. Most of that newer housing went in with combi boilers, and the older stock has largely been converted to them.
A combi heats water as it passes through, which means it has to raise the incoming mains from whatever temperature it arrives at to whatever temperature you want, all in a single pass and at the rate you are drawing it. In midsummer the mains might arrive at fifteen or sixteen degrees. In January it can be down around five. That is roughly ten degrees more work for the same tap, and a boiler at its limit in summer has nothing left to give in winter.
The result is a seasonal complaint that arrives every year and is usually not a fault at all. Mo covers the Lothian round and the honest answer matters here, because the wrong response to this is an expensive one: nobody should be replacing a healthy boiler over something that will improve by itself in April.
Bathgate is on the eastern run with Livingston and the West Lothian towns, so a booked boiler repair here usually gets a date within the week with a day and a window rather than an open morning. If the complaint is hot water performance rather than a breakdown, it is worth saying so, because that visit is mostly measuring and it can often be settled quickly.
No hot water at all rather than cooler hot water, out of hours, is the emergency boiler repair side, same number. This page is booked work.
Booked boiler repairs across Bathgate and out towards Armadale, Blackburn and Whitburn. Manufacturer certified for Worcester Bosch, Vaillant, Baxi, Ideal and Vokera.
Drainage is Paul and Kyle on the same number.
Radiators, pumps, valves and balancing across the older centre and the newer estates.
The seasonal pattern is the tell. If it was fine in October, poor in January and fine again by spring, nothing has failed. The appliance is doing the same work against a bigger temperature gap and running out of headroom.
Where the mixer has to be turned further towards hot each year, that is usually the incoming temperature rather than the boiler degrading. Worth noting the pattern rather than the reading, because the pattern is what distinguishes seasonal from faulty.
This is the version that is a fault. If each winter is worse than the last, something is degrading rather than simply being seasonal, and the usual candidate is the plate heat exchanger silting up. That is a repair and it is worth separating from the normal seasonal drop.
Where a combi was undersized for the property from the start, summer hides it and winter exposes it. That is not a fault either, but it is a real limitation, and it is worth being told honestly rather than chasing a repair that does not exist.
A newer estate house on the edge of town, second winter in a row of complaints about the shower, and a replacement boiler already quoted by somebody else on the basis that the appliance was struggling. We measured the incoming mains at just over five degrees and the hot water leaving the boiler at the temperature the appliance is rated to reach, which meant it was doing exactly what it was built to do and the gap was simply larger than in summer. The useful part was what the owner remembered: the previous spring it had been fine again. That pattern is seasonal rather than degrading. We fitted a flow restrictor to the shower, which trades a little flow for several degrees, checked the hot water setting on the boiler was where it should be, and left the appliance alone. It cost a fraction of a replacement and there was never anything wrong to fix.
Bathgate boiler work is usually Mo, who is Gas Safe registered. The part of this job that matters is being willing to tell somebody nothing is wrong. It is the least profitable answer available and it is frequently the correct one, and a customer who is told plainly that their boiler is healthy and their water is simply colder in January is better served than one who is sold a repair for a season. Where it genuinely is degrading rather than seasonal we will show you why we think so, with the measurements rather than the opinion, and then it is a real repair with a real reason behind it.

“Our radiator pipe was bent and leaking. They answered straight away… Guy was here an hour later and he was wearing ID, very professional, patient and kind. We just got a new carpet in this room and he done an amazing job on getting little to no water on it. Couldn't recommend enough, price was reasonable.”

“We lost heating just in time for the coldest day of the year with a baby in the house… When I contacted them they were ready to dispatch that night. Fixed by the afternoon. Quoted that morning and no extra charges were added. Honestly cannot thank them enough.”

“As a small business owner, I needed a drainage company that could respond quickly. The team attended first thing in the morning, cleared the blocked drain and carried out a full CCTV survey. All documentation emailed across promptly. Professional, efficient and great value for money.”
