Boiler Repair in Bonnybridge

Some of the boilers we still meet in Bonnybridge's older terraces have a small flame burning inside them all year round. That pilot light, and the thermocouple sitting in it, are behind a lot of boiler repairs on appliances of that age, and the honest news is that the fix is usually one small part rather than a new boiler.

About Bonnybridge

Bonnybridge has older terraced streets where a boiler that never stopped working was never given a reason to go.

Bonnybridge grew up along the Forth and Clyde Canal as an industrial village, with iron founding and brick making behind its terraced streets, and High Bonnybridge, Greenhill and the villages towards Banknock around it. The older housing is terraced and modest, and the post-war and later estates are family homes.

Before fanned, room-sealed boilers took over, many appliances lit their burner from a permanent pilot, a small flame that stays lit whether the heating is on or not. Some are wall hung, some floor standing, and some are back boilers sitting in the fireplace behind a gas fire. The pilot heats a thermocouple, which produces a tiny current that holds the gas valve open. If the pilot goes out, the current stops and the valve shuts, which is the safety system working as intended.

That is why the commonest fault on these appliances is a pilot that will not stay lit, and why the answer is so often the thermocouple rather than anything bigger. Muhammad, who is Gas Safe registered and focuses on boiler repairs, will fix an old boiler that is safe to fix, and he will say plainly when one is not.

Common Problems in Bonnybridge

A pilot that lights but will not stay lit

You hold the button, the pilot lights, you let go and it goes out. That is the classic sign the thermocouple is no longer producing enough current to hold the gas valve open. It is a small part, and on most of these appliances a short job.

A pilot that keeps going out on its own

If it was staying lit and now goes out every few days, the cause is often a draught across it, a partly blocked pilot jet, or a thermocouple sitting right on the edge. Relighting it each time keeps you warm and leaves the cause where it was.

A soft yellow flame instead of a crisp blue one

A healthy flame is sharp and mostly blue. A floppy yellow one means the gas is not burning cleanly, which can be dirt in the jet or a problem with the air supply or the flue. That is a stop-using-it-and-ring fault rather than a keep-an-eye-on-it one.

A back boiler with a fire that still works

The fire on the front and the boiler behind it are separate appliances sharing one chimney. The fire lighting happily tells you nothing about the boiler, and a fault in one is no reason to assume the other is fine. The fire is its own appliance and needs its own safety check.

Keep the Old Boiler Going, or Plan Its Replacement?

If the appliance burns cleanly, passes its safety checks and the fault is a thermocouple or a pilot assembly, repair it. That is a small job, and there is no sense replacing a working boiler because of its age alone. Plan the replacement instead when the parts are no longer made, when the heat exchanger or the gas valve has gone, or when it fails the safety checks, because at that point you are paying to keep going something that will not last. A replacement now has to be a condensing boiler in almost every case, which usually means a new flue position and a condensate pipe, so it is better thought about before it is forced on you in January.

“Our radiator pipe was bent and leaking. They answered straight away… Guy was here an hour later and he was wearing ID, very professional, patient and kind. We just got a new carpet in this room and he done an amazing job on getting little to no water on it. Couldn't recommend enough, price was reasonable.”

Bonnybridge Questions

Usually, yes. Thermocouples and pilot parts are still available for a lot of older appliances, and a pilot that will not stay lit is very often just that part. What decides it is whether the boiler burns cleanly and passes its safety checks once it is running, and whether the part your model needs can still be found. We will tell you which side of that line it is on before any work starts. Call 07988 591331.
