A boiler that has started making a noise is telling you something reasonably specific, and the useful part is that different noises mean different things. Banging is not the same fault as whistling and neither is the same as gurgling. Most people describe it as a strange noise and leave it at that, which is a shame, because the sound alone narrows it down a long way before anyone opens the case.
Tell us what's up, we usually get back within the hour with a clear price.
Irvine's heating stock is old enough that noise complaints are common here, and which noise it is genuinely narrows down the fault.
Irvine is a 1960s new town built around a much older harbour burgh, so it has two distinct halves. The estates at Bourtreehill, Girdle Toll, Broomlands and Castlepark went up as planned neighbourhoods, while the older streets down towards the harbour and the town centre long predate them. Boiler stock follows the split, with the estates carrying a lot of systems installed in programmes and the older property carrying a much more varied history.
What both halves have in common is age. A good deal of the heating here has been in place long enough for the circuits to have collected debris and for components to have worn, and both of those announce themselves through sound before they announce themselves through failure. That makes noise a genuinely useful early signal rather than a nuisance to be tolerated.
The reason it is worth writing down is that people ring and say the boiler is making a funny noise, and that description covers at least four different faults with four different costs. Muhammad covers the Ayrshire round and the first question is always what it actually sounds like, because the answer changes what goes on the van.
No heat at all and it will not keep is the emergency boiler repair side, same number. This page is booked work, and a noise is almost always booked work rather than an emergency.
Booked boiler repairs across Irvine, both the new town estates and the older harbour streets. Manufacturer certified for Worcester Bosch, Vaillant, Baxi, Ideal and Vokera.
Drainage is Paul and Kyle on the same number.
System cleaning, pumps, valves and balancing, which is where most noise complaints are actually resolved.
Called kettling, and it is the commonest one here. Debris in the heat exchanger creates hot spots where water flashes to steam against hot metal, and the noise is that happening repeatedly. It points at the system water rather than the appliance, and left alone long enough it cracks the most expensive part in the boiler.
Usually air or a restriction rather than debris. Water forced through a partly closed valve or past an airlock makes a very different sound from kettling, and the fix is correspondingly different and usually cheaper. Worth distinguishing before anyone talks about cleaning the system.
Air in the circuit, and on a sealed system that raises a second question, because a properly sealed system should not be gaining air. Repeated gurgling after bleeding usually means air is being drawn in somewhere, which is a different fault from simply needing a bleed.
Mechanical rather than hydraulic. A pump bearing, a fan, or a component that has worked loose against a bracket. It is generally localised, which makes it the easiest of the four to find, and the noise usually arrives well before the failure does.
Irvine boiler work is usually Muhammad, who is Gas Safe registered and covers the Ayrshire round. The reason the noise question gets asked properly on the phone is practical rather than clever: kettling means bringing what is needed to test and treat the system water, a whistle means expecting a valve or an airlock, and a hum means a mechanical part. Turning up with the wrong assumption costs a visit. It also stops the conversation defaulting to the expensive answer, because a boiler making a noise sounds alarming and is very often the cheapest category of fault we deal with.
Irvine is priced the same as the rest of our coverage with no loading for the journey out. You get a clear price before any work starts and that price is what goes on the invoice. Noise complaints vary more in cost than most, from a bleed and a balance at one end to a system clean at the other, so we diagnose before quoting rather than pricing off a description. If a second fault appears once the case is off, we stop and tell you first.
Worth spending a minute on this before you ring, because the sound is genuinely diagnostic and the four categories have very different answers. First, when does it happen? A noise only when the heating fires and builds up as the system gets hot points at kettling in the heat exchanger. A noise only on hot water points at the hot water side specifically. A noise all the time whenever the boiler has power is mechanical, usually a pump or a fan. Second, what does it sound like? Deep banging or a rolling boil is kettling, and that is a system water problem. A high whistle or a squeal is flow being forced through a restriction. Gurgling is air. A steady hum or a vibration is a motor. Third, where is it coming from? If you can hear it in the airing cupboard rather than at the boiler, the pump is the obvious suspect and the appliance may be innocent entirely. If it is coming from radiators rather than from the boiler, that is air or circulation and not an appliance fault at all. Fourth, has it changed? A noise that has crept up over a couple of winters is wear or gradual debris. One that started suddenly is more likely a component or something that has come loose. None of that replaces a proper test, and none of it should be used to decide against calling somebody. What it does is turn a strange noise into a question we can answer, and it means we arrive with the right things on the van.

“Our radiator pipe was bent and leaking. They answered straight away… Guy was here an hour later and he was wearing ID, very professional, patient and kind. We just got a new carpet in this room and he done an amazing job on getting little to no water on it. Couldn't recommend enough, price was reasonable.”

“We lost heating just in time for the coldest day of the year with a baby in the house… When I contacted them they were ready to dispatch that night. Fixed by the afternoon. Quoted that morning and no extra charges were added. Honestly cannot thank them enough.”

“As a small business owner, I needed a drainage company that could respond quickly. The team attended first thing in the morning, cleared the blocked drain and carried out a full CCTV survey. All documentation emailed across promptly. Professional, efficient and great value for money.”
