Plenty of houses round Airdrie have had a thick layer of insulation and render added to their outside walls in recent years, and the boiler flue was one of the things that had to be dealt with when it went on. Sometimes it was lengthened properly. Sometimes it was simply cut round. Either way, boiler installations on these houses need a flue long enough to pass through the old wall and the insulation, sealed so no water gets in behind the render, and ending far enough out to clear the new face of the house.

In short: Boiler installation in Airdrie ML6 by Gas Safe engineers. Houses with insulated, rendered outside walls need a flue made for the extra depth.

Many of Airdrie's ex-council houses now wear a layer of insulation and render on the outside, and that extra depth changes how a boiler flue has to pass through the wall.
Airdrie's older stone terraces and tenements sit round the town centre, with large council estates at Petersburn, Whinhall, Holehills and Craigneuk, villages such as Chapelhall, Calderbank, Plains and Glenmavis close by, and newer private estates on the edges. A lot of the council-built housing has since been bought by the people living in it, while the houses next door may still be rented.
Much of that council housing has been given external wall insulation: boards fixed to the outside of the walls and rendered over, which adds noticeable depth to every outside wall. Some of the houses treated this way are of non-traditional construction, built with concrete panels or a steel frame instead of brick, and the insulation was the practical way to make them warmer. It also covered over old flue holes and changed how far any existing flue terminal sticks out from the wall.
For a new boiler, that matters in three ways. The terminal has to project past the finished surface of the insulation, not the old wall behind it. The hole through the insulation has to be sealed so rain cannot track in behind the render. And because the render hides what the wall is made of, the survey has to work out what is under it before anybody starts cutting.
Waiting on an installation date and the old boiler stops? Ring 07988 591331 and we will look at whether a repair is sensible first.
Airdrie, Chapelhall, Calderbank and Plains, with every flue sized for the wall as it is today.
Condensate pipes are kept off the new render wherever there is an inside route.
Radiators checked against a house that now loses less heat, since newly insulated walls often let them run cooler.
A flue fitted before the insulation went on was meant to stick out from the old wall. If it was not lengthened at the time, the terminal can end up barely clear of the new surface or tucked into it, where exhaust can be drawn back towards the house. The new boiler's flue is sized for the full depth of the wall as it is now.
Every opening cut through external insulation is a place for water to get behind it. Round a flue, that means a sealed sleeve and the render finished and sealed to it, so rain runs off instead of soaking into the boards. Left open, the damage spreads quietly behind a surface that still looks fine from the street.
A condensing boiler's plume carries moisture that can streak a pale render below and beside the terminal. Where the house has a light finish, the terminal position and a deflector or plume kit are chosen to throw the discharge clear of the wall, which keeps the render clean far longer than scrubbing it ever will.
Behind the insulation the wall might be brick, block, concrete panel or a steel frame, and each is cut differently. In a steel-framed house the flue has to miss the frame altogether. The survey looks at the inside of the wall, the age and type of the house and any paperwork you have, so the route is known before the drill comes out.
A new boiler supplied and fitted starts from £699 including VAT, with the final price confirmed on the call or the visit. On an insulated wall, what adds to that is mostly the flue: longer sections, a sealed sleeve and making good the render round it. Those are measured at the free survey and written into the fixed price you agree before any work starts.
Reusing the existing opening is usually the tidier choice when the old terminal is in a position that still meets the rules and the opening through the insulation can be properly sleeved and sealed. The render round it is patched once and the new boiler sits where the old one did. A new opening makes sense when the old terminal sits too close to a window or door that has changed since, when the old hole was cut roughly through the insulation and cannot be sealed well, or when the boiler is moving anyway. It means a fresh core through the wall and a render patch in a new place, which on an older finish will not match perfectly in colour. On a front wall, that patch is often what tips the decision towards the old opening.

“Our radiator pipe was bent and leaking. They answered straight away… Guy was here an hour later and he was wearing ID, very professional, patient and kind. We just got a new carpet in this room and he done an amazing job on getting little to no water on it. Couldn't recommend enough, price was reasonable.”

“We lost heating just in time for the coldest day of the year with a baby in the house… When I contacted them they were ready to dispatch that night. Fixed by the afternoon. Quoted that morning and no extra charges were added. Honestly cannot thank them enough.”

“As a small business owner, I needed a drainage company that could respond quickly. The team attended first thing in the morning, cleared the blocked drain and carried out a full CCTV survey. All documentation emailed across promptly. Professional, efficient and great value for money.”
