Most quotes are honest and most jobs are what they look like. There are a few situations where a second opinion is genuinely worth the delay, though, and they are recognisable. We would rather say what they are than pretend every quote should be taken on trust, including ours.
Tell us what's up, we usually get back within the hour with a clear price.
Shotts is a small town where firms get used again or they do not, and plumbers who want the next job as well as this one are the ones worth having.
The trade has a reputation problem it has partly earned and is still working against, and the way out of it is not firms insisting they are honest. It is diagnosis anybody can check. A recommendation that names the actual fault, and says what was tested to find it, can be verified by a second firm or by the customer. One that describes a system as tired cannot be checked by anybody, which is precisely why it is worth pressing on.
So it is fair to expect an explanation and fair to take one away and think about it. We would rather lose a job to somebody cheaper on a fair comparison than win one because nobody asked what was wrong.
Shotts is on the Lanarkshire round and booked work goes into a planned day. If you want a second opinion on something you have already been quoted for, say so when you ring so we bring the right amount of time.
Out of hours Matt takes the callouts. In an emergency the job is making it safe first, and any conversation about replacing anything comes after that rather than during. Call 07988 591331.
Gas and heating is Mo, Muhammad or David, all Gas Safe registered. We diagnose to the part rather than changing several and seeing what helps.
Paul leads the drain team and Kyle runs the jetting. On a recurring blockage a camera tells you why, and a clearance only tells you it has moved.
Heating work across the housing here, including second looks at systems somebody else has recommended replacing.
A quote to replace a system should be able to explain what was measured or tested to get there. Where the answer is vague, that is the thing to press on rather than the price.
Pressure to decide on the spot is not a discount, it is a reason to wait. Any genuine quote is still genuine next week.
Replacing four components and seeing what fixes it costs you three parts you did not need. Diagnosis down to the one that failed is the standard worth expecting.
When the numbers are far apart it is usually because the work is not the same work. Comparing them properly means comparing what is included, not what is charged.
A household here was told their heating system was at the end of its life and needed replacing. The complaint was two cold radiators. Both were on one branch and the branch was blocked. Clearing it took an afternoon. We would rather that were an unusual story than a common one, and it is not as unusual as it should be.
We give you a clear price before any work starts and that price is what goes on the invoice. If we quote for a replacement we will tell you what we found that led there, in writing if you want it, so somebody else can check it.
Not on everything, because on a straightforward repair it wastes your time and the other firm's. Four situations where it genuinely is. First, whenever a quote is for replacing rather than repairing something that still works. That is the largest sum involved and the one where the reasoning matters most, so ask what was tested to reach it. Second, when the recommendation arrived without any diagnosis you can describe afterwards. If nobody felt the radiators, read the fault code or checked the pressure, then the conclusion came from somewhere other than your system. Third, when you are being asked to decide immediately. A real price does not expire on a Tuesday. Fourth, when two quotes are far apart, though what usually explains that is scope rather than dishonesty, so compare what each one includes before assuming anything. What to ask in each case is the same short list: what is actually wrong, how was that established, what happens if it is left, and what does the price include. Any firm worth using will answer all four without minding being asked.

“Our radiator pipe was bent and leaking. They answered straight away… Guy was here an hour later and he was wearing ID, very professional, patient and kind. We just got a new carpet in this room and he done an amazing job on getting little to no water on it. Couldn't recommend enough, price was reasonable.”

“We lost heating just in time for the coldest day of the year with a baby in the house… When I contacted them they were ready to dispatch that night. Fixed by the afternoon. Quoted that morning and no extra charges were added. Honestly cannot thank them enough.”

“As a small business owner, I needed a drainage company that could respond quickly. The team attended first thing in the morning, cleared the blocked drain and carried out a full CCTV survey. All documentation emailed across promptly. Professional, efficient and great value for money.”
